Mumbwa, 2nd September 2025 – Mumbwa Town Council has seized a total of 46 different items with an estimated market value of K3,656.00 during routine inspections conducted at various trading outlets in Kaindu area of Kalwanyembe Ward, Shimbizhi Ward, and Chisalu Ward (Shakumbila area).
The confiscated products included expired foodstuffs, carbonated drinks, juices, baby products, detergents, and personal care items. Notably, some products were found with tampered expiry dates, while others were dented or improperly exposed to contamination.
Health Inspector Mutemwa Nyambe, who led the team of Public Health Officers during the inspection, stated that the Council is gravely concerned that some traders are endangering the health and safety of consumers by stocking and selling products that do not meet minimum health standards. Such practices are a violation of the Public Health Act Cap 295 of the Laws of Zambia, Statutory Instrument (SI) No. 12 of 2018, and the Food Safety Act No. 7 of 2019.
This seizure exercise underscores the Council’s commitment to safeguarding public health and consumer rights by ensuring that only safe and quality products are sold on the market.
The public is hereby advised to always check expiry dates, packaging integrity, and labeling information before purchasing goods. Retailers are equally reminded that it is their responsibility to adhere strictly to food safety and consumer protection regulations. Any shop found stocking or selling expired, tampered, or unsafe products will face appropriate enforcement action, including fines, prosecution, and closure where necessary.
The Council remains dedicated to protecting the well-being of all citizens and will continue conducting regular inspections across all wards.
